ANNAPOLIS, Md.--Eight of UMBC's starting nine players recorded doubles as the UMBC baseball team trounced Navy, 18-6, on Wednesday afternoon at Terwilliger Brothers Field at Max Bishop Stadium.
Junior Brad Brainer (Chester, Md./Kent Island/Chesapeake JC) led the Retrievers (3-2), going 3-for-5 on the day with a double, a triple, a stolen base, three runs scored, and five RBI, while junior Dan Blewett (1-0) (Bel Air, Md./Bel Air) earned his first win since 2005 as he gave up five runs (three earned) on five hits, while striking out four in five innings of work.
Freshman Travis Pearson (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown West) earned the first save of his career as he pitched 2.1 scoreless and hitless innings in relief, striking out two in the process.
Kendall Bolt led the Midshipmen (3-4) in the loss, going 2-for-4 at the plate with one run scored, while Alec Thomas (0-1) was slated with the loss as he gave up seven runs (five earned) on five hits, while walking four in 3.1 innings pitched.
The Retrievers took the early, 1-0, lead off a Joe Fowler (Wilmington, Del./St. Mark's) RBI single in the first, but the Midshipmen answered in the bottom of the inning thanks to three hits and three Retriever errors to take a 3-1 lead.
The Retrievers cut that lead to one run in the second on junior Tom Meaney's (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem) RBI single and took the lead for good in the fourth as they added six runs on four hits to take an 8-3 lead.
Senior Will Delawter (Frederick, Md./Catoctin/Chesapeake JC) started things off in the inning with a walk, senior Steve Russo (Lancaster, Pa./Conestoga Valley) also reached on a walk and freshman Rich Conlon (Vienna, Va./James Madison) loaded the bases with a single to right to bring Meaney to the plate. Meaney's double to center brought two runs in and freshman Bryan Russo (Westbury, N.Y./Clarke) brought in another run with a sacrifice fly, but reached base on an error. Brainer and Fowler added the final runs as each tallied RBI singles before the side was retired.
The Midshipmen staged a comeback as they added two runs in the fifth and one in the seventh, to bring the score to 8-6, but another six run by the Retrievers in the eighth and four runs in the ninth put the game out of reach, 18-6.
Brainer hit a bases-clearing triple to start the scoring off in the eighth and Fowler, Delawter, and freshman Sterling Sams (Vienna, Va./James Madison) each added one run each on their respective hits, while junior Wink Nolan (Ellicott City, Md./Calvert Hall/Maryland), Brainer and Fowler each added an RBI in the ninth on the way to the 18-6 victory.
The Retrievers will return to competition this weekend when they host Manhattan in a three-game series from Friday to Sunday beginning with a 5:00 p.m. contest on Friday night.
