Poetzel, Gumbs Each Score First Career Goals in 2-1 Double Overtime Win Against Villanova

Box Score

Baltimore, Md.-- Sophomore Dylan Poetzel (Baltimore, Md./Archbishop Curley) tied it in the second half, with junior Nick Gumbs (Clarksburg, Md./Damascus) providing the heroics in double overtime to give UMBC a 2-1 win on Tuesday. Both Gumbs and Poetzel scored their first career goals in the match.

How We Got Here:

  • Tre Pulliam (Baltimore, Md./Archbishop Curley) had the first golden chance of the match in the 7th minute. Pulliam stole the ball at the top of the box, and put a good shot on net, but the Wildcat keeper made the save.

  • Just minutes later, Cesare Marconi (Loano, Italy) blasted a free kick from 24 yards out, but just missed the net.

  • The Wildcats struck first in the 20th minute, as Shane Bradley found the ball after it bounced around in the box, placing it past Jones to give Villanova the lead.

  • Pulliam once again nearly scored, but his one-time rip from 15 yards out was stopped by a sprawling Williams save.

  • The Retrievers had a good chance midway through the second half. Jon Bell (Silver Spring, Md./Richard Montgomery) served a free kick into the box, but it was turned aside.

  • Bell nearly struck in the 70th minute off a free kick. His cross attempt kept bending toward the goal, forcing Williams to make a play on the ball.

  • The Retrievers finally broke through on a goal from Dylan Poetzel in the 83rd minute. Poetzel collected the rebound off the Marconi free kick, and placed it home for his first collegiate goal.

  • Quantrell Jones (Baltimore, Md./Kenwood) kept it tied with a spectacular save in the 88th minute, pushing the ball over the bar on a shot out in front to force overtime.

  • After neither side could get anything going in the first overtime session, UMBC walked off with the win in the second frame.

  • Nick Gumbs took a header from Jordan Dove (Gambrills, Md./DeMatha) off a Patrick Jean-Gilles (Woodbridge, Va.) free kick and put it home to give UMBC the win.

By The Numbers:

  • UMBC outshot the Wildcats 17-12 with eight shots going on net.

  • Both sides had nine corner kicks, with the Retrievers going offside five times.

  • Gumbs, Marconi and Dove each led the Retrievers with three shots, the most by any player on Tuesday night.

  • This was the third straight overtime game for UMBC and fourth overall. The Retrievers are now 2-0-2 in those matches.

In Net:

  • Freshman Quantrell Jones made three saves, allowing one goal in the win to move to 4-0-1 on the year.

  • Villanova keeper Carson Williams made six saves in the loss that drops him to 6-6-1.

Up Next:

  • The Retrievers remain home to take on Binghamton in a crucial America East match on Saturday, Oct. 20. The match will be the team's annual Pink Game with kickoff at 7 p.m. Tickets are available at tickets.umbc.edu.
