Farmville, Va.-- UMBC senior midfielder Sean
Rothe (Dundalk, Md./Archbishop Curley) and
sophomore Pete Caringi
III (Perry Hall, Md./Calvert Hall) scored in a 46-second span
in the second half as visiting UMBC (3-2-2) erased a 1-0 halftime
deficit and went on to a 3-1 victory at Longwood (3-4-1) on
Saturday evening.
Senior Kingsley
Onwuka (Baltimore, Md./CCBC-Essex/Kenwood) added an
insurance goal in the 67th minute as the Retrievers
snapped a three-game winless streak.
The three goals were scored in a span of three minutes and 50
seconds. Eight of UMBC's nine goals this season have occurred in
the second half.
The hosts scored on their first shot of the game as UMBC allowed
its initial first-half score of the season. Sophomore forward Nick
Surkamp beat Retriever netminder Dan
Louisignau (Wilmington, Del.) with a low shot inside the
far post just 4:57 into the contest.
UMBC had two golden opportunities in the first half, but
Longwood netminder Joel Helmick made two brilliant stops against
Retriever senior forward Andrew
Bulls (Millersville, Md./McDonogh), thwarting a penalty
kick opportunity in the 40th minute and a diving
stop just before halftime.
But the Retrievers kept applying the pressure in the second half
and tied the game in the 63rdminute. Longwood attempted
to head out a serve into the box, but the ball was redirected to
Rothe, who beat Helmick from the right wing just inside the far
post.
The goal was Rothe's team-leading third goal of the
campaign.
Just 46 seconds later, UMBC took the lead, as junior
midfielder Milo
Kapor (Toronto, Canada) recorded the first of his two
assists of the contest. His pass sent freshman Joseph Glos
(Baltimore, Md./Perry Hall) down the line, and the charging Caringi
redirected Glos' cross past Helmick and tucked it inside the far
post.
Onwuka, who drew the first half penalty kick, scored his first
goal in a Retriever uniform to give the visitors their first
two-goal advantage of the season. He was on the end of passes from
Kapor and Caringi and scored from 20 yards out.
UMBC outshot Longwood, 14-11, and Louisignau picked up the win
in a five-save effort. Helmick made four saves for the Lancers.
The win was UMBC's first vs. Longwood in six all-time meetings
(1-4-1).
The Retrievers play their third consecutive game on the road
when they visit La Salle on Tuesday.
