PHILADELPHIA—The UMBC women's soccer team (0-4-0) dropped its fourth straight match to open the season, falling to Pennsylvania (1-0-0) by a score of 3-0 Friday evening at the Quakers' Rhodes Field.

Penn took an early lead in the 11th minute when midfielder Erin Beck sent a through-ball, which forward Ursula Lopez-Palm sent toward goal, and forward Marin McDermott finished it off for all the offense the hosts would need.

The Quakers got an insurance goal in the second minute of the second half, as a scramble in front of the UMBC goal ended with forward Kathryn Barth deflecting a header by forward Kerry Scalora past Retriever sophomore goalie Lauren Kadet (Oakville, Ontario/St. Thomas Aquinas).

Penn's final goal came in the 75th minute, when McDermott's cross from the right side was pushed home by Beck.

Kadet finished with four saves in 79 minutes between the pipes, while senior Mo Van Vlerah (Germantown, Md./Northwest) stopped one shot in the final 11 minutes. Sarah Banks and Caroline Williams each played one half in goal for Penn, with Banks earning the only two saves of the game.

The Quakers outshot the Retrievers, 16-4, and held a 12-0 advantage on corner kicks. Sophomore forward Amy Savage (Ottawa, Ontario/Sir Wilfrid Laurier) took all four of UMBC's shots in the game.

The Retrievers return to action on Sunday, when they host Bucknell at 1 p.m. at Retriever Soccer Park.
