The UMBC Event Center officially opened on Feb. 3, 2018, as the UMBC men’s basketball team hosted the Vermont Catamounts before a capacity crowd of 4,753. Both the men’s and women’s basketball teams played their February and March games in the new facility, which included three post-season victories.
The UMBC volleyball team will begin play in the Event Center in September of 2018. The on-campus facility can accommodate nearly 6,000 patrons for commencements, concerts, featured speakers, and other events. It includes spectator facilities, such as concessions, catering, hospitality, restrooms, security and guest services.
The 172,000 square-foot facility is situated adjacent to both the UMBC Stadium Complex and Retriever Soccer Park. The design for the project was prepared by Cannon Design in collaboration with the University and was constructed by Barton Malow.
The UMBC Event Center is managed by the Oak View Group. For additional information about events, please see https://www.umbceventcenter.com/.
Located on the third floor, the UMBC athletics department moved its administrative and coaches’ offices into the facility in March of 2018. In addition, The Retriever Room adorns the third floor and is a 2,100-square foot multi-functional space. It serves as a VIP area for basketball games and also provides a great view of events held at UMBC Stadium. The Retriever Room is also available for rental for banquets, meetings and other non-UMBC events.
The Retriever Team Store is located on the concourse, adjacent to the ticket office. It features Retriever apparel and other items, many of which commemorate UMBC’s historic win over Virginia in the 2018 NCAA Tournament.
The first level of the UMBC Event Center houses UMBC, visiting team and officials locker rooms, a media room, The Academic Center for Student-Athletes and Retriever Sports Medicine Services. There is a loading dock area on the east end of the facility. Just above the loading dock is a 450-square foot, state-of-the-art video board.
The UMBC Event Center also features a distributed sound system and over 2,000 light fixtures.
A private, auxiliary gymnasium for the basketball and volleyball teams is located on the ground floor of the building.
