Retriever athletic alumni play a significant role in the growth of the university as UMBC is now in its fifth decade. Dozens of student-athletes compete athletically after their time at UMBC, including three Olympians and a number of professional baseball, basketball, lacrosse and soccer players, while other alumni turn to coaching at their alma mater or other schools throughout the nation. Many more pursue post-graduate degrees and enter the work force in all fields, including medicine, law and business.
Former student-athletes continue to support their programs and the athletic department by donating their time and resources through participating in workshops, serving on university committees or just coming back to support the Black and Gold. Athletic alumni come back in great numbers at UMBC's annual Homecoming, buoyed by the competitive juices generated by various alumni games. Another popular alumni event is the biennial UMBC Athletic Hall of Fame Dinner, which most recently took place in January 2014.
Following the tradition of the men's lacrosse, many sports now host annual preseason functions to introduce the current team and reconnect with alumni. Retriever alumni are encouraged to bookmark UMBC Athletics website and the UMBC Alumni Community website, Retriever Net, to stay in step with the Dawgs!
