BALTIMORE – University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) is proud to announce the grand opening of the UMBC Event Center on February 3, 2018. The official opening will be held during the UMBC men's basketball game against University of Vermont at 4 p.m. on February 3, 2018. Kickoff events will continue on Thursday, February 8, 2018 at the UMBC women's basketball game against Binghamton at 7 p.m.
"The completion of the Event Center marks an important milestone in UMBC's evolution. This venue will provide our athletic teams with an exceptional home base, while also enabling us to host more events focused on the arts, culture, and the life of the mind," said Freeman Hrabowski, president of UMBC. "We are delighted that we will now be able to open our doors even more broadly to the community."
Community members are invited to explore the new center before the grand unveiling at a family-friendly community day event on Thursday, February 1. The doors will be open to the public from 4-8 p.m. and include tours of the facility, concession samples, and entertainment.
The facility offers seating for approximately 6,000 spectators, making it an exciting extension of the already robust campus landscape. In addition to serving as the home for men's and women's NCAA basketball and women's volleyball, the new facility will also allow UMBC to play host to cultural events, concerts, and guest speakers.
"The Event Center represents a place for the UMBC community–broadly defined–to convene and celebrate competitive athletics contests, concerts and shows, and maybe most important, commencement ceremonies," said Greg Simmons, vice president for institutional advancement.
Spanning an impressive 172,000 square feet, the Event Center will include a practice gymnasium; the offices of the Department of Athletics; state-of-the-art strength and conditioning and academic centers; a sports medicine suite; multimedia spaces; meeting facilities; and the UMBC Athletics Hall of Fame.
"The move to the Event Center has the entire department, campus, and community energized," said Tim Hall, director of athletics. "We can't wait to see how the next chapter in our athletic program's history unfolds."
UMBC partnered with Oak View Group Facilities (OVG) to manage the venue and provide ticketing support.
"We are thrilled to be working with the University to open and manage the new Event Center," said OVG Facilities, Tiffany Sun, general manager of the UMBC Event Center. "With the location of the venue and the available space, the Event Center is going to be a great jewel for the University and the community. Our team has an aggressive plan for the space, and we can't wait to open the doors and welcome everyone in to the new venue."
Tickets and advance registration are not required for the February 1 community day. Tickets for the men's and women's basketball games are available at Ticketmaster. For media inquiries, please contact Candace Dodson-Reed at email@example.com.
