The Down and Dirty Dawg Band

Down and Dirty Dawg Band Official Site

The Down and Dirty Dawg Band is the Pep Band for UMBC Athletics. The band is considered by fans throughout the conference as the best in the AEC. The mission of the band is to support the athletic teams of UMBC. The DDDB plays at all home basketball games and other selected events.

The band has been in existence since 1996, but really took off with the hiring of director Jari Villanueva in 1999. Villanueva expanded the music selections to include Jazz, Swing, Rock, Latin and Popular tunes as well. Jari lead the band for performances on NBC’s Today Show and ABC’s Good Morning America. Villanueva retired in 2010 and was replaced by former band member (and a talented musician in his own right) Matt Basch. Matt’s most recent contribution has been the establishment of the very popular UMBC drumline. Paul Wetzstein is the current director. Wetzstein is a UMBC alumnus and holds a Bachelor of Arts in Music with an emphasis on education.

Membership in the band is open to all UMBC students. The band ranges in number between 40 and 60 members. Rehearsals take place on Wednesday nights at 8pm in the RAC . For more information contact Paul Wetzstein at
