Jafar Hussen (New Carrolton, Md./Parkdale) is the UMBC Athlete of the Week after his performance earned him America East Conference Cross Country Male Performer of the Week for Week No. 1 of the campaign.

Hussen finished second at the Mount St. Mary's 5K Duals in UMBC's opening season meet in Emmitsburg. The senior crossed the finish line in a time of 15:08.48, setting a new course record for a Retriever.
 
Hussen's time eclipsed the previous mark of 15:17.20, set by Brandan McGee in 2012.
