Hyland and Zwama Named All-Conference as Cross Country Places Fifth and Seventh at America East Championships

    Freshman Paul Zwama earned All-Conference honors for his 10th place finish at the conference championship meet.

    STONY BROOK, N.Y.—The UMBC men’s and women’s cross country teams finished competition on Saturday at the 2007 America East Championships with the men finishing fifth with 125 total points and the women seventh with 182 points.  Both teams improved from last year’s meet as the men finished sixth and the women finished eighth in 2006.

     

    Senior Alex Hyland (Toms River, N.J./Toms River South/St. Francis (Pa.)) had quite a showing in her first America East championship meet as she placed third overall, running the 5,008-meter course in 17:55.10 to lead the Retrievers.

     

    Junior Suzanne Richards (Backwell, England/Longborough University) and freshman Suzanne Gabriel (Falls Church, Va./McLean) followed Hyland, turning in 32nd and 46th place finishes with times of 19:26.40 and 20:11.80, respectively.

     

    Senior Tawny Barin (Columbus, N.J./North Burlington County) and junior Allison Mathis (Williamstown, N.J./Williamstown) rounded out the scoring five for the Retrievers with times of 21:03.20 and 21:19.50 for 62nd and 65th place finishes, respectively.

     

    On the men’s side, freshman Paul Zwama (Groningen, Netherlands/CSG Dingstede) continued his leadership of the Retriever squad as he finished 10th overall with at time of 26:33.50 for the 8,124-meter course.  Junior Anthony Kelhower (Mount Laurel, N.J./Lenape) was just behind him, finishing 11th in 26:38.30.

     

    Freshman Chris Bowie (Bethesda, Md./Bethesda-Chevy Chase), junior Andrew Madison (Edgewater, Md./South River) and junior Josh Okoniewski (Lusby, Md./Patuxent) rounded out the scoring five with 29th, 30th, and 50th place finishes in times of 27:21.10, 27:21.70, and 28:46.40, respectively.

     

    Hyland and Zwama each earned All-Conference honors, while Andrea Walkonen of Boston University and Alex Felce of Stony Brook took the individual titles.  On the women’s side, Stony Brook stunned four-time defending champion Boston U. to take their first ever America East title, and New Hampshire earned their second consecutive team title on the men’s side.

     

    The Retrievers return to action on Saturday, Nov. 10, when they compete in the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional Championships, which will be held in Bethlehem, Pa.
