Hyland Takes Individual Title as UMBC Cross Country Competes At W&M Tribe Open

    Senior Alex Hyland won the 6K at the Tribe Open with a time of 22:02.10.

    , Va.—Junior Alex Hyland (Toms River, N.J./Toms River South/St. Francis (Pa.) was the top overall finisher in the women’s 6K course at the William and Mary Tribe Open on Saturday.

     

    The men’s and women’s cross country teams faced competition from James Madison, Virginia Commonwealth, Virginia, Richmond, Norfolk State, and host William and Mary among others, though the race did not have team scoring.

     

    Hyland turned in a time of 22:02.10 for the 6K course to outdistance her closest competitor by over 26 seconds.

     

    Junior Suzanne Richards (Backwell, England/Longborough University) crossed the line second for the Retrievers, recording a time of 23:13.60, good for 10th place, while sophomore Suzanne Gabriel (Falls Church, Va./McLean) was third for the Retrievers, finishing 22nd with a time of 23:35.10.

     

    Senior Tawny Barin (Columbus, N.J./N. Burlington County) and junior Allison Mathis (Williamstown, N.J./Williamstown) rounded out the top-five finishers for the Retrievers, finishing 41st and 58th, respectively, with times of 24:43.10 and 25:34.20.

     

    On the men’s side, freshman Paul Zwama (Groningen, Netherlands/CSG Dingstede) was the top Retriever finisher for the third time this season, as he finished the 8K course in a time of 25:11.00 for a 13th place finish.

     

    Junior Andrew Madison (Edgewater, Md./South River) was second across the line for UMBC, finishing in 26:14.00 for 26th place and freshman Chris Snyder (McConnellsburg, Pa./McConnellsburg) was right on his heels, finishing 27th with a time of 26:17.00.

     

    Freshman Chris Bowie (Bethesda, Md./Bethesda-Chevy Chase) crossed the line next for the Retrievers with a 39th place finish in 26:46.00, while junior Josh Okoniewski (Lusby, Md./Patuxent) rounded out the top-five Retriever runners with a time of 26:53.00, good for 42nd place.

     

    The Retrievers will take one week off before traveling to Long Island, N.Y. to compete in the America East Championships hosted by Stony Brook on Saturday, Oct. 27.
