BETHLEHEM, Pa.—The men’s and women’s cross country teams finished competition at the Lehigh Paul Short Invitational on Saturday, finishing in 33rd and 43rd place with 829 and 1152 total places, respectively.
Senior Alex Hyland (Toms River, N.J./Toms River South/St. Francis) led the Retrievers on the women’s side, finishing the 6K course in a time of 21:58, good for 62nd place. Hyland’s time is the first time in recent UMBC history that an athlete has broken 22:00 on a 6K course.
Sophomore Suzanne Gabriel (Falls Church, Va./McLean) crossed the line second for the Retrievers, with a time of 23:45, for 207th place, while senior Tawny Barin (Columbus, N.J./N. Burlington County) was third with a 284th place finish in 25:12.
Freshman Cortney Crouse (Union Bridge, Md./Linganore) and junior Allison Mathis (Williamstown, N.J./Williamstown) rounded out the scoring five, finishing 301st in a time of 26:06 and 308th in a time of 26:24, respectively.
Freshman Paul Zwama (Groningen, Netherlands/CSG Dingstede) led the men, finishing 64th with an 8K time of 25:30. Junior Andrew Madison (Edgewater, Md./South River) followed Zwama as the second Retriever to cross the line as he finished with a time of 26:10 for 137th place.
Freshman Chris Bowie (Bethesda, Md./Bethesda-Chevy Chase) was next across for the Retrievers, finishing 151st in a time of 26:15, while freshmen Chris Snyder (McConnellsburg, Pa./McConnellsburg) and Colin Haser (Sykseville, Md./Century) rounded out the top five finishing in 208th and 269th place with times of 26:53 and 29:46, respectively.
The Retrievers will take a week off before traveling to Williamsburg, Va. For the William and Mary Tribe Invitational on Oct. 13.
