UMBC Hires Scott Catone as Head Cross Country and Assistant Track and Field Coach

1/9/2007

Scott Catone has been named the head cross country and assistant track and field coach.

BALTIMORE—Director of Athletics Dr. Charles Brown announced today the hiring of Scott Catone as the head cross country and assistant track and field coach at UMBC.

“Coach Catone brings to UMBC a championship mentality,” said Brown.  “He has a wealth of experience as a coach of distance runners on the collegiate level.  We are very fortunate to be able to add Scott Catone to our coaching staff.”

Catone comes to UMBC after serving as the head men’s and women’s track and field and cross country coach at St. Francis University (Pa.) for six years.

In his tenure at St. Francis (Pa.), Catone led the Red Flash to three straight Northeast Conference men’s cross country championships, four straight Northeast Conference women’s cross country championships, three straight Northeast Conference men’s indoor track and field championships, two Northeast Conference men’s outdoor track and field championships and two Northeast Conference women’s outdoor track and field championships.

In addition, Catone was named Northeast Conference Coach of the Year twelve times during his stay at St. Francis (Pa.) and has coached men’s and women’s cross country programs that were named NCAA All-Academic for the 2001-2005 seasons, men’s and women’s outdoor track and field programs that were named NCAA All-Academic for the 2002-2005 seasons, and three individual NCAA All-Americans.

Prior to joining the Red Flash, Catone served as the men’s and women’s assistant cross country and track and field coach at Manhattan College for three years from 1999-2001.  Catone began his coaching career at Wagner College, where he served as the men’s and women’s assistant cross country coach from 1997-1999.

A 1995 graduate of Wagner College, Catone earned his Bachelor’s Degree in history with minors in political science and education and completed his Masters Degree in secondary education in 1998.

“I am very excited to join UMBC’s cross country and track and field program,” said Catone.  “I would like to continue its escalating placement at the America East Conference championships and look forward to developing the student-athletes as a whole.”

Catone takes over a program that won its first men’s cross country Division I championship in 2005 under Murray Davis and that has seen increasingly higher finishes at the women’s cross country championships.

He is married to Theresa Catone and has two sons, Brett (3) and Nolan (8 months).
