Women's Cross Country Wins Three of Four at Mt. St. Mary's Dual 5K's; Men Split

    The UMBC women’s and men’s cross country teams opened their respective 2006 campaigns at the Mt. St. Mary’s Dual 5K’s in Emmitsburg, Maryland. The women won three of four dual meets, while the men split their four competitions.

     

    The women defeated Mt. St. Mary’s, 21-35, George Washington, 22-37 and Loyola, 26-29, while falling to American, 23-32. Freshman Suzanne Gabriel and senior Kathleen Galan finished fourth and fifth respectively, as Gabriel broke the 20-minute mark at 19:58.25, while Galan finished at 20:06.07. UMBC’s next two finishers were sophomore Emily Saltsman (21:05.33) and senior Morgan Little (21:19.95), who placed 12th and 13th respectively. UMBC’s final scorer was newcomer Mairin Leahy, who placed 22nd in a time of 21:50.60.

     

    American was a perfect 4-0 on the women’s side, followed by UMBC, Loyola (2-2) and George Washington (0-4).

     

    The men easily defeated George Washington, 16-47 and Loyola, 19-45, but fell to American, 25-30 and the host Mountaineers, 22-34. UMBC was led by Anthony Kelhower, who placed fourth overall in a time of 16:18.34. Matt Cowhey placed eighth in a time of 16:34.19, while Shawn Shokry was in ninth at 16:37.64. Andrew Madison (16:47.75) came in 14th place, while Blake Davis (17:04.73) was UMBC’s final scorer in 19th place.  

     

    The host Mountaineers won all four meets, followed by American (3-1), UMBC, Loyola (1-3) and George Washington (0-4).
