MEN’S CROSS COUNTRY SCORES THREE OF TOP FOUR PLACES, SWEEPS COMPETITION AT MOUNT ST. MARY’S DUALS

    Izudin Mehmedovic placed first overall at the Mount St. Mary's Duals.

    Emmitsburg, Md. – The UMBC men’s cross country team placed three runners in the top-four including Izudin Mehmedovic, who captured first overall to lead UMBC to a sweep of the competition at the Mount St. Mary’s Duals.  Stefanie Thomas led the women’s team with an eighth place overall finish.  Scoring at the meet is done by recording team’s top five finishers versus their opponents top-five finishers.  With UMBC scoring three runners in the top-four on the men’s side, UMBC was able score a perfect 15 (the first five finishers) against three other teams.

     

    The meet consisted of UMBC, host Mount St. Mary’s, American, George Washington, Loyola (Md.) and Morgan State.  The UMBC men’s team defeated Mount St. Mary’s, 21-37, American, 22-35, George Washington, 15-48, Loyola (Md.), 15-46 and Morgan State, 15-50. 

     

    Mehmedovic finished the 5K run in 15:40.40 for the first place victory.  Shawn Shokry took third overall in 15:59.67 and J.J. Wetzel placed fourth in 16:03.14.  Ryan Cartwright took ninth in 16:15.27 and Blake Davis rounded out the scoring with an 11 place finish in 16:18.33.

     

    On the women’s side the Retrievers followed the lead of Thomas, who placed eighth in a 5K time of 20:04.05.  Kathaleen Galan took 10th in 20:09.39.  Other Retriever scorers include freshman Allison Mathis in 19th in 21:18.38, newcomer Emily Saltsman  in 27th with a time of 21:54.73 and Tawny Barin finishing 30th in 22:13.38.

     

    The women defeated Morgan State, 15-45 but fell to American, 37-19, George Washington, 27-28, Loyola (Md.), 20-38, and Mount St. Mary’s, 23-36.
