10/27/2001

The Retriever cross country teams competed at the Northeast Conference Cross Country Championships in Pittsburgh, PA today, with the men placing fourth and the women taking ninth place of the twelve league teams competing. St. Francis (PA) won both meets, taking first in the men's division for the third straight time. They totalled 35 points, followed by FDU (41), Monmouth (96), UMBC (107) and Quinnipiac (116). Less than 50 seconds separated UMBC's top seven runners. Sophomore Doug Allen placed 17th overall in a time of 26:32, ten seconds and one place ahead of senior Jake Klim. Junior Ben Werbos was 20th (26:48), followed by classmate Phil Knowlton (27:00) and senior Conrad Haber (27:09). The women, plagued by injuries to their top runners this fall, amassed 210 points to finish ninth. St. Francis (PA) easily won the meet with 45 points, far ahead of second place Sacred Heart (115). Freshman Cara Wettlaufer was UMBC's top finisher, placing 23rd overall in a time of 19:27.
