State College, Pa. - The UMBC men’s and women’s cross country team’s competed in the highly competitive Penn State National Invitational on Saturday with the men’s team placing 24th out of 38 programs and the women’s team taking 30th against 41 programs. The men’s race covered a 5.2 mile course with a field of 322 runners while the women’s race featured a field 288 runners deep that covered a 6K course.

Izudin Mehmedovic led UMBC with a time of 26:49, placing 57 overall. Shawn Shokry was the second best Retriever in 27:03 for 78th. Other Retriever scorers included Blake Davis (27:48, 154), J.J. Wetzel (28:00, 170) and Ryan Cartwright (28:05, 171).

The UMBC women’s team for the second week in a row were paced by senior Cara Wettlaufer who finished in 100th place in 22:48. Stefanie Thomas took 127th in 23:08. Other Retriever scorers for the women were U’Tonna Sherrod (23:46, 174), Kathleen Galan (24:10, 211) and Morgan Little (24:14, 216).

The Retrievers have a week off next week before traveling to the America East Conference Championships at the University of New Hampshire on Oct. 30.
