MEN'S CROSS COUNTRY RUNS AWAY WITH MARYLAND STATE TITLE; WOMEN PLACE THIRD

The men's cross country team captured its second title of the year, easily outdistancing the field to win the Maryland State Cross Country Championships, held at Anne Arundel Community College. The UMBC women, competing without top competitors Jen Ecker and Hannah Benjamin placed third in the meet. Nine Retriever men earned All State honors, finishing in the top 15. UMBC won the meet with 24 points, followed by Coppin State (58) and Towson (74). Sophomore Doug Allen paced the squad, finishing in second position in a time of 25:13. Senior Jake Klim (25:19) and junior Ben Werbos (25:29) were third and fourth respectively. Also in the top 15 were Phil Knowlton (7th-25:23), Conrad Haber (8th-25:46), Adam Driscoll (11th-26:04) and Greg Saylor (13th-26:11). UMBC earlier took the Baltimore Metro Meet to kick off the season. Towson (39) nipped Loyola (41) to win the women's meet. UMBC (71) took third place. Freshman Cara Wettlaufer was outstanding, placing second overall in a time of 19:50. Also earning All State honors were Sarah Bowling (12th-20:28) and Ohita Asein (15th-20:53).
