Cross Country Teams Head to Albany for America East Championships

Keri Wilson leads the Retrievers in her last America East Championships

BALTIMORE—The UMBC men’s and women’s cross country teams travel to Albany, N.Y., this weekend to take part in the 2011 America East Cross Country Championships Saturday, hosted by the University at Albany.

The men’s team looks to improve on a fifth-place finish in 2010 and the women look to bounce back from last year’s eighth-place finish. The men are led by senior Sam Boimov (Montgomery Village, Md./Gaithersburg/Salisbury), who has finished in the top three for the Retrievers in all four meets this season, and the women are paced by senior Keri Wilson (Columbia, Md./Long Reach), who has led the Retrievers across the line in every meet this season.  

The men will also count on sophomore Brandan McGee (Hiram, Ohio/Crestwood), who has led the way for the Retrievers in half of their meets this season, including a fourth overall finish at the Mount St. Mary’s Dual 5k. The women also look to freshman Julie Gessler (Ellicott City, Md./Institute of Notre Dame), who has finished in the top five for the Retrievers in all of this season’s events, including her best finish of 20th overall in the season opener at Mount St. Mary’s.  

Last year, Boston University won the men’s race, while Stony Brook took the women’s title for the fourth consecutive season. The UMBC men look to overcome a string of fifth-place finishes and bring back the conference title for the first time since 2005, while the women look to improve on last year’s finish and try to end Stony Brook’s title streak.
