VESTAL, N.Y. – Senior Cody Mezebish (Westminster, Md./South Carroll) took 15th individually and the UMBC women's cross country team earned its best-ever finish at the America East Championships by placing fifth, Saturday morning at Binghamton University.
In their previous ten America East championship races, the UMBC women had placed seventh overall three times and eighth on seven occasions since joining the league in 2003. New Hampshire captured the team title with 46 points with Stony Brook (63 pts.) and Vermont (77 pts.) following in second and third. Albany (82 pts.) and the Retrievers (155 pts.) followed with Hartford (161 pts.), UMass Lowell (193 pts.), Maine (194), and meet-host Binghamton (214 pts.) rounding out the standings.
Mezebish led the Retriever squad for the third straight competition with her 5k time of 18:25.33, less than a minute behind race winner Oliva Burne (17:30.14) of Stony Brook. Her time is also a minute improvement over her time of 19:25.3 from the season-opening America East Pre-Conference meet held on the same course back on Sept. 7.
Sophomore Nicole Dawson (Jessup, Md./Hammond) was the next Retriever across the line, scoring once again for UMBC by finishing in 30th with a time of 19:12.34. Junior Sarah Daly (Lake Orion, Mich./Lake Orion) was just behind her teammate, crossing the line in a time of 19:17.57 in 33rd. Junior Julie Gessler (Ellicott City, Md./Institute of Notre Dame) and senior Kirsten McGovern (Sykesville, Md./Century) closed out the UMBC scoring squad by finishing back-to-back in 44th (19:45.42) and 45th (19:47.71).
The Retriever women now close out their 2013 campaign by competing at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional on Nov. 15 at Lehigh.
