Cross Country Returns to Competition This Weekend at the Mason Invitational

BALTIMORE - Both the men's and women's cross country teams will participate in the Mason Invitational this weekend in Leesburg Va. at the Oatlands Plantations. The 8K men's race and the 6K women's race are both scheduled to start at 10:00 a.m.

 

The men's team is coming off a third place finish at the Towson Invitational a little over a week ago at Oregon Ridge Park. The Retrievers were paced by junior Vinny DiSalvo(Washingtonville, N.Y./Washingtonville) who finished fifth overall, completing the five mile run with a time of 26:52.9. Freshmen Zach Hopkins (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill), Andrew Kereszetes (Port Jefferson, N.Y./Port Jefferson), and Ben Pickett (Abingdon, Md./John Carroll), as well as junior Andrew Smith (Chadds Ford, Pa./Garnet Valley) all finished within the top-20 for the Retrievers.

 

Junior Brandan McGee (Hiram, Ohio/Crestwood) did not compete for UMBC last week, but paced the squad at the first two races of the season, the 5K Spider Alumni Open and the 8K Navy Invitational.

 

The UMBC women are also coming off a third place finish at the Towson Invitational. Junior Kirsten McGovern (Skysville, Md./Century) led the Retriever women, taking third overall by completing the 5K course in a time of 19:08.83. All five scorers finished in the top-16 led by freshmen Nicole Dawson (Jessup, Md./Hammond) and sophomore Sarah Daly (Lake Orion, Mich./Lake Orion).

 

McGovern was the third Retriever to lead the team this year as Daly paced the squad at the season-opening two-mile Spider Alumni Open and junior Cody Mezebish (Westminster, Md./South Carroll) led the team at the Salty Dog Invitational in Annapolis.
