Cross Country Heads around the Beltway for Towson Invitational on Friday
BALTIMORE – The UMBC cross country teams will make a short trip around the beltway on Friday to take part in the Towson Invitational held at Oregon Ridge Park in Cockeysville, Md. Race time is set for 4:30 p.m.
The Retrievers are heading to Oregon Ridge on shorter than normal rest, having just competed at the U.S.N.A. Golf Club last Saturday. The men's squad finished fifth in the Navy Invitational, once again paced by junior Brandan McGee (Hiram, Ohio/Crestwood), while the women's team placed seventh behind leader Cody Mezebish (Westminster, Md./South Carroll) at the Salty Dog Invitational.
McGee, the top-Retriever finisher in both races this season, finished 13th overall in Annapolis, completing the 8K course in 25:38.11. He was followed by a pair of returners as junior Jake Albino(Hampton, N.Y./Minisink Valley) and sophomore Eric Schuler (Columbia, Md./Reservoir) placed 20th and 21st, respectively.
For the women, the junior captain led the way with a 6K time of 23:50 to finish 22nd overall in the race. Rookie Nicole Dawson (Jessup, Md./Hammond) was just 20 seconds behind Mezebish's pace to finish in 38th. Junior Kirsten McGovern (Sykesville, Md./Century) and sophomore Sarah Daly (Lake Orion, Mich./Lake Orion), the top UMBC finisher at the season-opening Spider Alumni Open, also scored for the Retrievers.
