BALTIMORE – The UMBC cross country teams continue their seasons this Saturday in Annapolis at the United States Naval Academy Golf Club as the men compete in the 8K Navy Invitational while the women take part in the 6K Salty Dog Invitational. The men's race is set to start at 11 a.m. with the women's race commencing just a half an hour later at 11:30 a.m.
In the Retrievers' opening race of the year, the Spider Alumni Open, hosted by the University of Richmond, junior Brandan McGee (Hiram, Ohio/Crestwood) paced the men's team, placing fourth overall on the 5K course in a time of 15:17.2. This marked the fifth time in his career that McGee has led the Retrievers after crossing the finish line first, four times as a sophomore.
Trailing just behind McGee, five UMBC runners took spots 13-17 at the season-opener led by junior Jake Albino and senior captain TJ Cowing (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) who finished in times of 15:31.8 and 15:32.2, respectively.
On the women's side, sophomore Sarah Daly (Lake Orion, Mich./Lake Orion) paced UMBC in her first cross country race for the Retrievers. After not competing in cross country but running during both the indoor and outdoor track seasons a year ago, Daly crossed the finish line in a two mile time of 11:16.6, good for 16th place, and less than one second ahead of freshman Angel Bucci (Upper Darby, Pa./Upper Darby).
Junior Cody Mezebish (Westminster, Md./South Carroll) and freshman Nicole Dawson (Jessup, Md./Hammond) were less than a half of a minute behind, placing 30th and 31st, respectively, for the Retrievers.
