Men Take Second, Women Finish Third at Season Opening Spider Alumni Open

MECHANICSVILLE, Va. – UMBC cross country junior Brandan McGee (Hiram, Ohio/Crestwood) finished fourth in the men's race and sophomore Sarah Daly finished 16th in the women's race, to lead the Retrievers Saturday morning at the season-opening Spider Alumni Open at Pole Green Park.  The men's squad finished second, behind only host Richmond, with 50 points while the women placed third.

Continuing his leadership from last year when he led UMBC across the line five times, McGee was the top Retriever finisher on Saturday, completing the 5K course in personal-best and school record time of 15:17.2.  A large UMBC contingent was not far behind as five Retrievers finished 13th through 17th led by junior Jake Albino (Hampton, N.Y./Minisink Valley) who finished in 15:31.8. Senior captain TJ Cowing (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) was just behind his teammate with a time of 15:32.2.

For the women, sophomore Sarah Daly (Lake Orion, Mich./Lake Orion), competing in her first race for the Retrievers, crossed the line first for the Black and Gold with a two-mile time of 11:16.6. Freshman Angel Bucci (Upper Darby, Pa./Upper Darby) was just off of Daly's pace, finishing less than a second behind at 11:17.1 to take 17th place.

The Retrievers now have the week off from competition before heading down to the US Naval Academy for the Navy Invitational/Salty Dog Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 15 beginning at 11 a.m.
