UMBC VOLLEYBALL GOES 2-1 AT VILLANOVA INVITATIONAL

Villanova, Pa. – The UMBC Retrievers (7-6) split two matches in day two action at the Villanova Invitational, defeating Pennsylvania (2-3) in come-from-behind fashion, 3-2, prior to falling to host school Villanova (3-9), 3-1. The Retrievers finished the three-game tournament with a 2-1 record.
In the first game of the day for UMBC, the Retrievers pulled out a thrilling come-from-behind five-set win, topping Penn, 3-2. The Retrievers got off on the wrong foot to start day two, dropping the opening two sets to Penn, 30-19 and 34-32. The Retrievers then retaliated by taking the final three sets of the match, pulling out game three with a 31-29 win led by 19 kills on 42 attempts (.286) and then tied the match up at 2-2 by hitting .318 in game four to give UMBC the 30-25 set victory. In the fifth and decisive set, the Retrievers finished off the comeback with a 15-7 win.
Sophomore Megan Gross (Montclair, Va./Forest Park) once again racked up the assists with 61 in the match. Taking full advantage of Gross’ assists was teammates Jocelyn Teoh (Selangor, Malaysia/Bujit Jalil Sports Academy) and Jennifer Davis (Hamilton, Ontario/Sir Aleen Macnab) as Teoh recorded 30 kills and hit .329 while Davis scored 21 kills on 35 attempts for a .429 hitting percentage.
In the final match of the tournament UMBC grabbed the first game, 30-28, before the Wildcats took the final three sets, 30-18, 30-22, 30-20, to take the 3-1 win. The Wildcats tallied 66 kills and a hitting percentage of .239 in the match.
The Retrievers were led by the combination of Teoh and Gross as Teoh had a double-double, scoring 18 kills and 17 digs, while Gross recorded 35 assists to bring her three match tournament total to 144 assists.
Davis and Teoh represented the Retrievers on the all-tournament team as Davis earned tournament most valuable player honors.
