VOLLEYBALL FALLS IN FIVE TO GEORGE WASHINGTON

Baltimore, MD - - -The visiting George Washington Colonials (3-6) tookthe fifth and deciding game, 15-8, en-route to a 25-30, 30-22, 30-20,26-30, 15-8, non-conference victory over the UMBC Retrievers (6-8),Tuesday evening at the Retriever Activities Center.Colonials' freshman outside hitter Molly Law recorded 4 of her 15 killsin game five, and George Washington held UMBC to a -.091 hittingpercentage in the game. The score was tied at 6-6, but the Colonialsscored 9 of the next 11 points to put the Retrievers away.UMBC jumped out to an early 1-0 lead as the Retrievers hit .261 andsenior outside hitter Dana Cookson totaled 7 kills.George Washington handled UMBC easily as sophomore Ruth Lazzari matchedCookson with 7 kills in game two and the Colonials hit .310 compared tojust .098 for UMBC.The Colonials went up 2-1 as Lazzari and Law combined for 9 kills. Lawalso added 10 digs in the game.UMBC forced a fifth and deciding game despite hitting just .122 in gamefour. Cookson and freshman outside hitter Tauna Woolery each recorded 3kills and sophomore Jennifer Davis added 2 kills and 2 solo blocks.Lazzari finished with a match-high 21 kills and a team-high 26 digs forthe Colonials. Law added 15 kills and 25 digs while freshman BrittaStroman was solid with 15 kills and 13 digs.Cookson finished with a team-high 16 kills for UMBC and Woolery added 10kills and 13 digs. Davis added a match-high 27 digs and freshmanCrystal Castro added 26 digs.
