Sherelle Walker was named the America East Rookie of the Week

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – UMBC freshman outside hitter Sherelle Walker (New Freedom, Pa./Susqehannock) was named the America East Rookie of the Week, the conference office announced on Monday afternoon.  The honor is Walker’s third of the season as she was named the conference Player and Rookie of the Week two weeks ago on Sept. 17.

New Hampshire’s Morgan Thatcher was named the Player of the Week for the second straight week while her teammate Jansan Falcusan was named the Setter of the Week.

This past weekend, as UMBC opened up its home conference schedule, Walker totaled 39 kills while hitting .419 against New Hampshire and Providence.  On Friday against the Wildcats, the rookie recorded a new career-high with 22 kills, but the Retrievers fell in five sets.  Coming back on Sunday, Walker closed out the weekend with a match-best 17 winners while posting a .469 hitting efficiency to lead UMBC to a come-from-behind victory over the Friars, 3-1.

For the season, Walker leads the team in both hitting percentage (.238) and kills (223), while ranking fourth and fifth, respectively, in those categories in the America East.

After the brief home stand this past weekend, UMBC heads back on the road later this week to take on a pair of conference rivals.  The Retrievers face Hartford on Friday at 6 p.m. before heading crossing the Hudson to square off against Albany on Sunday afternoon.
