Volleyball’s Hannah Schmidt Voted UMBC Athlete of the Month for August

BALTIMORE – Sophomore outside hitter Hannah Schmidt (Catonsville, Md./Mount de Sales) of the volleyball team was named UMBC’s Athlete of the Month for August 2012 in a poll conducted from September 5-12. Schmidt earned 47% of the vote to win the vote over men’s soccer goal keeper Phil Saunders (Perry Hall, Md./Perry Hall) and women’s soccer net minder Lauren Kadet (Oakville, Ontario/St. Thomas Aquinas).
In the Retrievers’ six matches during the month of August, Schmidt notched 58 kills and 56 digs to place second on the team, respectively, in both statistical categories. In addition, the sophomore recorded three double-doubles during the month, setting season-highs with a 14-kill and 13-dig effort at George Mason.
Now into the team’s second month, Schmidt leads the team with 13 service aces and remains second on the team in kills (119) and digs (127), behind only freshman Sherelle Walker’s 140 winners and junior Ali Goc’s 168 digs.
