Head Coach Ian Blanchard
BALTIMORE Ė The UMBC volleyball team travels to the Great Lakes State this weekend to take part in the Adidas/Michigan Challenge at Cliff Keen Arena on the campus the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. The Retrievers will take on SEC foe Arkansas on Friday, Aug. 31 at 4 p.m. to open tournament play. The following morning UMBC faces off against tournament host and No. 22-ranked Michigan at 11 a.m., before concluding tournament play against Central Michigan at 5 p.m.
Scouting the Retrievers
The Retrievers are 2-3 this season after losing a nail-biting five-set match at George Mason on Tuesday evening. Senior right-side Ali Loynachan (Whitby, Ontario/Sinclair) and sophomore outside hitter Hannah Schmidt (Catonsville, Md./Mount de Sales) each recorded double-doubles, while freshman Sherelle Walker posted her third straight double-digit kill contest with 13 put-aways against the Patriots. For Schmidt it was her third double-double of the season, surpassing her mark of two set last year as a freshman.
Freshman setter Paige Miller (Reading, Pa./Shuylkill Valley) also impressed, dishing out a career-high 46 assists for UMBC. The rookie leads the Retrievers with two, 40-assist contests this season and has recorded a team-high 136 assists.
On defense, junior Ali Goc (Oshawa, Ontario/R.S. McLaughlin) leads the squad with 57 digs following a 26 dig performance on Tuesday. Schmidt is not far behind, however, having recorded 51 digs on the season.
On the Razorbacks: Arkansas is 4-0 on the young season after sweeping Tulsa, 3-0, on Tuesday night in Fayetteville. Senior outside hitter Jasmine Norton led the Razorbacks with 14 kills and 11 digs while her classmate, opposite hitter Roslandy Acosta, notched 10 kills. Norton leads the team with 54 kills this season and junior libero Emily Helm has a team-best 71 digs.
All-Time Series vs. Arkansas: UMBC and Arkansas have never met in volleyball. The Retrievers are 0-2 all-time against SEC opponents, falling to Alabama, 3-0, at home in 1990, and to Auburn, 3-0, at the 1997 George Mason Invitational.
On the Wolverines: Michigan swept through the Missouri Invitational to open the season, capping the weekend with a win over the host Tigers to improve to 4-0 and earn the No. 22 ranking in the latest AVCA poll. Junior outside hitter Lexi Erwin recorded a double-double against Mizzou with 20 kills and 10 digs and leads the team with 88 kills in 2012. Freshman libero Tiffany Morales registered 20 digs in the contest and has a team-high 58 digs on the season.
All-Time Series vs. Michigan: The Retrievers and Wolverines have never met on the volleyball court. UMBC last played against a Big Ten member in 2010 when the Black and Gold lost to Ohio State in the Maddie Bingaman Tournament at the RAC Arena.
On the Chippewas: Central Michigan is 2-1 on the season after rebounding from a season-opening loss to Auburn with wins against UW-Green Bay and Drake at the Green Bay/Country Inn & Suites Tournament last weekend. Senior outside hitter Lindsey Dulude and junior libero Jenna Coates were named to the All-Tournament Team for the Chippewas. Dulude totaled 34 kills, 37 digs and five blocks in the three matches while Coates led all players with 75 digs over the weekend.
All-Time Series vs. Central Michigan: UMBC has never faced Central Michigan in volleyball. The Retrievers are 1-0 against Eastern Michigan, winning in five sets in 2003, but 0-1 against Western Michigan after getting swept at the 2010 Seton Hall Invitational.
