Cambridge, Mass. – Senior setter Allie Spaay (Kenosha, Wis./Kenosha Tremper) was named the America East Setter of the Week for the second consecutive week, the conference office announced on Monday. The honor comes just a day after Spaay set a career-high in assists with 67 to help lead the Retrievers get past Providence and gain a spot in the conference tournament.
In the five set match against the Friars, Spaay crushed her previous high of 55 assists, set in the season-opening win over Long Island in 2009. The senior also picked up 10 digs against Providence to record her 14th double-double of the season.
Over her four year career in Baltimore, Spaay has notched 2,234 career assists, placing her seventh on UMBC’s all-time list. She now has five contests in her career with 50 or more assists, with two of those matches coming this season, including one against Friday’s opponent Albany.
This season, Spaay has shot up the school list compiling 40 or more assists in nine contests and 30 or more assists in 17 of the Retrievers 27 contests.
Spaay and UMBC take on Albany in the America East Semifinals on Friday in a rematch of last year’s championship match. The contest is set to begin at 7 p.m. with the winner taking on the New Hampshire-Stony Brook victor on Saturday evening.
