Tolliver and Spaay Sweep Weekly America East Volleyball Awards

11/7/2011

Allie Spaay was named America East Setter of the Week

CAMBRIDGE, MASS. – UMBC volleyball freshman Dalton Tolliver (Ortonville, Mich./Notre Dame) has  been named both the America East Player of the Week and Rookie of the Week, while senior Allie Spaay (Kenosha, Wis./Kenosha Tremper) has been named Setter of the Week for the week ending Nov. 6, the conference announced Monday afternoon.  This is Tolliver’s second Rookie of the Week and first Player of the Week award of 2011, while Spaay has now been honored twice as the top setter in the conference.

The awards come just a day after the Retrievers completed a weekend sweep of conference foes New Hampshire and Hartford.  UMBC defeated the Wildcats in three sets on Friday night and then dispatched the Hawks 3-1 during Senior Day on Sunday.

Tolliver has been instrumental to the Retrievers recent success, particularly over the weekend when she led the team in kills in both matches, finishing with 13 on Friday and setting a season-high mark of 17 on Sunday.  In addition, the freshman hit .611 and recorded 2 services aces against New Hampshire while picking up five blocks in the match versus Hartford.

Spaay had quite the final weekend at the RAC Arena, posting 34 assists in the sweep of New Hampshire and then besting that performance with 48 assists contest on Sunday.  Also against Hartford, Spaay picked up 13 digs to record her 13th double-double of the year.  In 2011 Spaay has registered 30 or more assists in 16 matches and 40 or more assists in eight contests.

UMBC has now picked up seven weekly awards this season with Tolliver leading the way with three selections.

The Retrievers now hit the road to finish their regular season looking to wrap up a spot in the America East Championships taking on Providence on Sunday at 1 p.m.  UMBC swept the Friars earlier this year 3-0 in Baltimore.
