Volleyball Defeats Providence, 3-0, Sunday in Final Regular Season Match

    BALTIMORE—The UMBC volleyball team concluded the 2010 regular season on a high note, defeating Providence, 25-9, 25-17, 25-17, Sunday at the RAC Arena. With the win, the Retrievers (11-16, 7-5 America East) clinch the third seed for the America East Championships and will face No. 2 Binghamton in the semifinals on Friday.

     

    The Retrievers dominated the action the entire match, hitting an outstanding .330, while holding the Friars to a .067 hitting percentage. UMBC also led in service aces, 13-3, and digs, 49-34.

     

    Freshman Ali Goc (Oshawa, Ontario, Canada/R.S. McLaughlin Collegiate) led all hitters with nine kills and no errors, hitting .450 for the day, while adding nine digs.

     

    Senior Sabrina Hoeks (Olympia, Wash./AG West Black Hills) hit a UMBC season-high seven service aces in her final home game, while adding seven kills and a game-high 14 digs. In the first set, Hoeks served four points in a row and five out of six serves to propel the Retrievers to a 25-9 opening set win.

     

    Freshman Hallie Carter (Huntington Beach, Calif./Edison) added four aces and 10 digs, while junior Iman Kennedy (Charlotte, N.C./Independence) hit .417 with six kills and only one error.

     

    Senior Bianca Sande (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif./Torrey Pines) recorded five kills and three digs in the third set in her final home appearance for the Retrievers.
