WACLAWIAK & SKALA SWEEP NEC VOLLEYBALL HONORS
UMBC sophomore outside hitter Julia Waclawiak (Ronald Reagan/San Antonio, TX) and freshman outside hitter Christine Skala (Hinsdale South/Hinsdale, Illinois) were both recognized by the Northeast Conference for their strong play this past week. Waclawiak garnered Player of the Week honors and Skala was selected as the Rookie of the Week.
Waclawiak takes home her first NEC Player of the Week honor after averaging 4.14 kills per game and 4.43 digs per game, while hitting .394 in two conference wins last week. She posted a double-double in a 3-1 win over Long Island with a team-high 13 kills and 14 digs to start the weekend on Saturday. Waclawiak then followed up with a rare triple-double on Sunday against St. Francis (NY), with a match-high 17 digs, 16 kills and 12 assists. She also hit .640 with no errors and added three aces and 3.5 blocks in the 3-0 win over the Terriers. On the year, Waclawiak leads the Retrievers with 3.88 digs per game and ranks second with 2.95 kills per game.
Skala is named NEC Rookie of the Week for the first time after tallying 30 kills, 7 service aces, 25 digs, 14 assists and a .367 hitting percentage last week. She posted 13 kills, 5 aces and 12 digs in the Retrievers 3-1 win over Long Island and then recorded her first career triple-double with 17 kills, 14 assists and 13 digs against St. Francis (NY). Skala also hit .556 and contributed 2 aces and 1.5 blocks versus the Terriers. As a freshman, she leads UMBC in kills per game (3.06) and is currently averaging 3.02 digs per game.
