Volleyball Falls at Albany, 3-1, Sunday

    ALBANY, N.Y.—The UMBC volleyball team dropped a four-game decision at Albany, 3-1, Sunday afternoon. With the 25-16, 23-25, 25-18, 25-14 loss, the Retrievers (9-14, 5-3 AEC) dropped their first America East contest in five matches, while the Great Danes (16-7, 6-2 AEC) moved into sole possession of first place and has the inside track to host the conference tournament.

     

    UMBC was led by senior Sabrina Hoeks (Olympia, Wash./AG West Black Hills), who recorded her team-high 11th double-double with a game-high 14 kills and 14 digs. Freshman Ali Goc (Oshawa, Ontario, Canada/R.S. McLaughlin Collegiate) led the defense with 21 digs.

     

    Junior Allie Spaay (Kenosha, Wis./Kenosha Tremper) also recorded a double-double with 28 assists and 18 digs, while fellow junior Iman Kennedy (Charlotte, N.C./Independence) posted five total blocks. With 12 assisted blocks this weekend, Kennedy has moved into seventh all-time at UMBC with 186 career assisted blocks.

     

    Neither team hit the ball well as Albany held the advantage, .161 to .043, but the Great Danes led in service aces, 11-4.

     

    The Retrievers return to action next weekend when they travel to Hartford Friday at 6 p.m. and Stony Brook Sunday at 1 p.m.
