Volleyball Takes Part in Dig Pink Campaign, faces Stony Brook Friday

    BALTIMORE—The UMBC volleyball hosts Stony Brook and Hartford at the RAC this weekend, taking on the Seawolves Friday at 7 p.m. and Hartford Sunday at 2 p.m. Friday night, the Retrievers will take part in the Side-Out Foundation’s Dig Pink Campaign to help raise breast cancer awareness.     DIG PINK: The UMBC volleyball team is selling t-shirts (black shirts with pink “UMBC Volleyball” print on the front and a pink ribbon on the back) for $15. Please contact assistant coach Sarah Warner at sarahwarner@umbc.edu for advance purchase information.

     

    The UMBC women’s lacrosse team is selling pink hair extensions Thursdays during the month of October from 11-1 in the lobby of the RAC for $10. They will also be sold before the match on Friday night.

    RETRIEVER REPORT: Junior Iman Kennedy hit .438 with 17 kills and five blocks to lead the UMBC volleyball team to its first America East win of the season, as the Retrievers defeated rival Binghamton, 23-25, 25-15, 25-20, 25-21  at the RAC Arena Sunday. Three Retrievers had double-doubles, including junior Allie Spaay, who had a UMBC season-high 45 assists to go along with 15 digs. Senior Sabrina Hoeks added 13 kills and 15 digs, while freshman Ali Goc recorded 11 kills and 13 digs.

     

    For the season, Hoeks leads the team in kills (2.71 kps) and aces (0.56 aps), while Kennedy leads the team in blocks (1.04 bps) and freshman Hallie Carter leads the team in digs (3.76 dps).

     

    Kennedy now has 158 career assisted blocks, eighth-most in Retriever history. Hoeks has moved into ninth with 126 career service aces, while Spaay is 10th all-time at UMBC with 814 assists.

     

    SCOUTING THE SEAWOLVES: Stony Brook (6-12, 1-1 AEC) comes to Baltimore after falling at New Hampshire Sunday, 3-1. Alicia Nelson leads the Seawolves in kills (3.54 kills per set), while Jeanette Gibbs leads the team with 3.01 digs per set. Kelsey Sullivan and Corinne Perry split the setting duties with 6.81 and 5.13 assists per set, respectively.

     

    All-Time Series: UMBC leads the series, 7-6, and has won three out of the last four meetings. The two teams’ split last year’s series, with both teams winning 3-0 at home.

     

    SCOUTING THE HAWKS: Hartford (5-14, 0-2 AEC) comes to Baltimore  having dropped its last five matches, including 3-1 at New Hampshire and 3-0 at Providence. Kami Nethersole leads the Hawks with 3.26 kills per set, while Danielle Etta leads the team with 3.13 digs per set. Lindsay Ford directs the offense with 8.42 assists per set.

     

    All-Time Series: UMBC leads the series, 15-1, and has won 12 straight meetings. Last year, the Retrievers won 3-0 at home and 3-1 up in West Hartford, Ct. The last Hartford win came in 2003.
