BALTIMORE—The UMBC volleyball team travels to South Orange, N.J. this weekend for the Seton Hall Invitational. The Retrievers (4-5) will take on the host Pirates Friday at 8 p.m. before facing off with Western Michigan and Northeastern on Saturday at 12:30 p.m. and 3 p.m., respectively.

The Retrievers went 2-3 this past week, dropping a three-set match to George Washington before going 2-2 in the Madison Bingaman Memorial Tournament. The Retrievers defeated Howard and Brown, but fell to Big Ten power Ohio State and suffered a heartbreaking defeat to Sacred Heart. Senior Sabrina Hoeks (Olympia, Wash./AG West Black Hills) was named to the All-Tournament team after leading the team with 50 kills (2.94 kps) and 12 service aces (0.71 aps).

Freshman Ali Goc (Oshawa, Ontario, Canada/R.S. McLaughlin Collegiate) continued her strong freshman campaign, hitting 49 kills (2.88 kps) while adding 41 digs (2.41 dps). Freshman Rebecca Garrigues (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif./Rancho Cucamonga) also had a strong tournament, leading the team in both hitting percentage (.268) and assists (6.50 aps).

Yet another freshman, Hallie Carter (Huntington Beach, Calif./Edison), led the team with 48 digs (3.00 dps) and junior Iman Kennedy (Charlotte, N.C./Independence) led the team with 21 total blocks (1.24 bps).

It will be the first time the Pirates and Retrievers have faced off since 1995, when UMBC was victorious in four sets. The series is tied 2-2. It will be the first-ever meeting between UMBC and Western Michigan. Northeastern and UMBC faced off in last year’s Madison Bingaman Memorial Tournament in Baltimore, with the Huskies coming away with a 3-2 victory. Northeastern holds a 7-1 all-time lead over the Retrievers, with UMBC’s only win coming in 1999.
