UMBC Volleyball Picked to Finish Third in America East Coaches Poll

8/16/2010

CAMBRIDGE, Mass.—The UMBC volleyball team has been picked to finish third in the Preseason America East Coaches Poll, as announced by the conference Monday afternoon. The Retrievers finished with 24 points, including one first place vote. Defending conference champion Binghamton was picked to repeat with 33 points and five first place votes, while Albany was picked to finish second with 31 points and the final first place vote. New Hampshire (22), Stony Brook (20), Hartford (11) and first-year associate member Providence (6) rounded out the poll.

This year’s team will feature a great amount of youth, with nine freshmen on the roster. The squad’s veteran is senior outside hitter and defensive specialist Sabrina Hoeks (Olympia, Wash./AG West Black Hills), a 2007 all-rookie selection who led the league in service aces (0.43 saps) last season. The Retrievers, who topped all teams but Albany in blocks, were led in that category by junior Iman Kennedy (Charlotte, N.C./Independence) who tallied a team-high 77 total blocks.

The Retrievers open the 2010 season with the Battle of the Baltimore at the RAC Arena on Friday, Sept. 3 at noon against Coppin State followed by a matchup with Loyola at 6 p.m. Every home game of the 2010 season will be broadcast live at http://www.umbcretrievers.tv.
