Volleyball Hosts Albany and Binghamton in Final Home Matches of 2009 Season This Weekend

BALTIMORE—The UMBC volleyball team plays host to its final two home matches of the season this weekend, facing Albany Friday at 7 p.m. before playing Binghamton on Saturday at 6 p.m. Saturday night at the RAC is Senior Night, as the Retrievers’ four seniors, Kira Giles, Pam Jarrett, Ashley Oscars and Helen Smith will be honored before the match.
LAST TIME OUT: The Retrievers (13-9, 5-2 America East) defeated Hartford, 3-0, at the RAC last Friday night. Freshman Naomi Bush was named America East Rookie of the Week after hitting .643 with nine kills and no errors on 14 swings against the Hawks. The Retrievers hit .324 as a team with sophomore Alyssa Lang hitting seven kills and senior Ashley Oscars earning six.
SCOUTING THE COMPETITION: Albany (17-8, 7-0 America East) won its 13th consecutive match, defeating New Hampshire, 3-0, last Friday night. Valerie Sourbeer leads the Great Danes with 3.03 kills per set, while Laurie Gonzalez leads the team with 4.93 digs per set. The 2008 America East Setter of the Year Brooke Stanley direct the offense with 10.44 assists per set.
Albany leads the all-time series, 13-2, and has won the past four meetings against the Retrievers. The Great Danes won, 3-0, in Albany, N.Y. on Oct. 18.
Binghamton (11-13, 3-4 America East) has lost four matches in a row, including 3-0 to New Hampshire on Sunday. Michele McDonough leads the Bearcats with 3.83 kills per set, while Brianna Strong averages 4.46 digs per set. The Bearcat offense is directed by Lindsey Mueller, who averages 9.94 assist per set.
Binghamton leads the all-time series, 12-4, and had won five matches in a row against the Retrievers, before UMBC pulled out a 3-2 victory in Vestal, N.Y. on Oct. 16.
