10/30/2009

  • Box Score

Freshman Naomi Bush hit nine kills Friday.

BALTIMORE—Freshman Naomi Bush (Fruitport, Mich./Fruitport) hit an outstanding .643 with nine kills and no errors as the UMBC volleyball team improved to 13-9 on the season and 5-2 in America East play as it defeated Hartford, 25-20, 25-11 and 25-16.

“We had a great effort from everyone tonight,” head coach Ian Blanchard. “Our setters (senior Kira Giles and sophomore Allie Spaay) did a good job of keeping our hitters in rhythm and giving them very hittable balls.”

The Retrievers controlled the entire match, outhiting the Hawks, .324-.012 and only hitting nine errors to Hartford’s 25 miscues. UMBC also led in blocks, 6-2, and service aces, 8-3.

Sophomore Alyssa Lang (Richmond, Va./Deep Run) hit .375 with seven kills, while senior Pam Jarrett (Lincoln, Neb./Lincoln Pius X) led the team with nine digs. Sophomore Sarah Joy (Ottawa, Ontario, Canada/Brookfield) led UMBC with five blocks.

“Sarah did great job of blocking in the middle for us tonight,” Blanchard said.

The Retrievers return to action next Friday as they take on Albany at the RAC at 7 p.m.
