10/23/2009

Sophomore Iman Kennedy hit .571 against the Seawolves Friday night.

BALTIMORE—Sophomore Iman Kennedy (Charlotte, N.C./Independence) hit .571 with nine errors against one error as the UMBC volleyball team defeated Stony Brook, 3-0, Friday night at the RAC Arena. With the win, the Retrievers move to 12-8 on the season and 4-1 in America East play, while the Seawolves fall to 10-11 overall and 2-3 in conference play.

Stony Brook cut the gap in each game fairly late in each set, but the Retrievers used good serving down the stretch to win 25-22, 25-20 and 25-19.

“We had a complete team effort tonight,” head coach Ian Blanchard said. “We’ve been up 2-0 in a few games this season and let up, but we maintained composure when we needed to.”

The Retrievers outhit the Seawolves .300-.263 and had seven service aces to Stony Brook’s two. Sophomore Alyssa Lang (Richmond, Va./Deep Run) led all hitters with 13 kills, while senior Pam Jarrett (Lincoln, Neb./Lincoln Pius X) had a game-high 13 digs.

Sophomore Allie Spaay (Kenosha, Wisc./Kenosha Tremper) recorded her fourth double-double of the season with 18 assists and 11 digs. Senior Kira Giles (Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada/Glenlawn) led the team with 20 assists.

Both teams return to action Sunday when they play the second game of a home-and-home in Stony Brook, N.Y. at 2 p.m.
