9/8/2002
Jamie Leverentz recorded eight of her career-high 14 kills in the last two games to help spark the Navy women's volleyball team to a five game victory over UMBC, Saturday night at Macdonough Hall in the title match of the Trident Classic. The Mids defeated the Retreivers, 24-30, 30-27, 19-30, 30-26, 15-11.In the decisive game five -- Navy's second five-game match of the day -- a Kristin Davidson kill gave the Mids a 10-9 advantage, which quickly grew to 13-9 after a Retriever hitting error, an Ashleigh Shear service ace and another kill by Davidson. Following a kill by UMBC, Leverentz recorded her 14th kill of the match to take Navy to championship point. A Navy serving error returned the serve to UMBC, but Erica McElroy pounded down the final point of the match to give Navy the title. The Mids won the title by virtue of defeating UMBC head-to-head, since both teams ended the weekend with 2-1 records.
