Freshman Ali Loynachan hit five kills Sunday.

ALBANY, N.Y.—The UMBC volleyball team dropped its first America East match of the season Sunday, falling to Albany, 3-0. With the loss the Retrievers fell to 11-8 on the season and 3-1 in conference play, while the Great Danes improved to 13-8 and 4-0 in AEC play.

The Retrievers were unable to continue the momentum from Friday night’s 3-2 victory over Binghamton, being outhit .324 to -.040, while the Great Danes led in kills 41-23. Albany also outblocked UMBC 11-3.

Senior Kira Giles (Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada/Glenlawn) recorded a double-double, earning 12 assists and 10 digs, while freshman Ali Loynachan (Whitby, Ontario, Canada/Sinclair) led the Retrievers, hitting .188 with five kills.

The Retrievers return to action Friday night when they play host to Stony Brook at 7 p.m.
