Retriever Volleyball Takes on America East Rivals Binghamton, Albany This Weekend

BALTIMORE.—The UMBC volleyball team travels to New York this weekend to face off against America East rivals Binghamton and Albany. The Retrievers face the Bearcats Friday at 7 p.m. before taking on the Great Danes Sunday at 2 p.m. Senior Kira Giles needs just two assists to move into third place in career assists at UMBC.

 

LAST TIME OUT: The Retrievers (10-7, 2-0 America East) won their fourth straight match and eight out of nine as they defeated New Hampshire, 3-2, last Friday at the RAC. Sophomore Alyssa Lang had a game-high 21 kills, while also recording 15 digs to complete her third consecutive double-double. Seniors Ashley Oscars (15 kills, 13 digs) and Kira Giles (15 assists and 14 digs) and sophomore Allie Spaay (35 assists and 17 digs) also recorded double-doubles.

 

SCOUTING THE COMPETITION: Binghamton (10-8, 2-0 AEC) comes into the match also on a four-match winning streak as they defeated Hartford, 3-0, last Friday night. The Bearcats are led by Michelle McDonough who averages 3.78 kills and 2.65 digs per set and Anna Lejina, who leads the team with 4.10 kills per set.

 

Binghamton leads the all-time series, 12-3, and has won 12 out of the last 13. The last time the Retrievers were victorious was in the 2006 America East Semifinals. The Bearcats eliminated UMBC in the conference semifinals last year, 3-2.

 

Albany (11-8, 2-0 AEC) has won their past eight matches, including a 3-0 win over Siena on Wednesday night. Valerie Sourbeer leads the Great Danes with 2.93 kills per set, while Laurie Gonzalez leads the team with 4.56 digs per set. Reigning America East Setter of the Year Brooke Stanley directs the Great Dane offense with 10.21 assists per set.

 

Albany, the defending America East Champion, leads the all-time series, 12-2, and has won 12 out of the last 13. The Retrievers last win in the series came in 2007 in Baltimore.
