UMBC

BALTIMORE.—The UMBC volleyball team travels to College Park, Md. this weekend to take part in the Spring Hill Suites at Arundel Mills Maryland Invitational. The Retrievers face Howard Friday at 5 p.m., VCU Saturday at 11 a.m. and host Maryland Saturday at 7 p.m.

LAST TIME OUT: The Retrievers (4-6) defeated Morgan State in straight sets Tuesday night at the RAC. Freshman Ali Loynachan led the Retrievers with 10 kills, while senior Ashley Oscars had eight kills without an error.

SCOUTING THE COMPETITION: Howard (1-12) currently holds a four-match losing streak, with their only win coming against North Carolina Central on Sept. 10. Gazelle D’Artois leads the Bison with 3.51 kills per game and 2.20 digs per set. UMBC has won the last seven meetings, including 3-0 last season, and has won 17 of 20 overall matchups.

VCU (7-4) lost three of four in the Michigan/Pepsi Challenge in Ann Arbor, Mich. last weekend. The Rams are led by Mariel Frey, who averages 3.00 kills per set and 2.66 digs per set. UMBC is 11-2 against VCU all time, winning the past two meetings.

Maryland comes into the weekend at a record of 4-6, after losing their last outing, 3-2, against Georgetown. Kara Bates leads the Terps with 2.85 kills per set and Sam Rosario leads the team with 4.23 digs per set. UMBC has never defeated Maryland in nine previous matches, the last meeting coming in 2002.

Senior Ashley Oscars is climbing the charts of two all-time career lists at UMBC, kills and attacks, while fellow senior Kira Giles is in the top-10 in career assists and assisted blocks. Senior Pam Jarrett is ninth in career digs and became the ninth player in school history to record 1,000 digs in the 3-0 victory over Princeton.
