UMBC Volleyball Falls to George Mason, 3-0, Wednesday Evening

BALTIMORE—The UMBC volleyball team fell to George Mason, 3-0, at the RAC Arena on Wednesday night. With the loss, the Retrievers fall to 2-4, while the Patriots improved to 6-2.
The Retrievers were unable to continue their intensity from their West Coast trip over the weekend, being outhit by the Patriots .367-.108. GMU also outblocked UMBC 9-1.
“I was disappointed that we were not able to match the level of play that we achieved in California,” head coach Ian Blanchard said. “I hope that we can put this behind us quickly.”
Senior Ashley Oscars (Bakersfield, Calif./Liberty) led the Retrievers, hitting .310 with 11 kills and seven digs. Junior Sabrina Hoeks (Olympia, Wash./AG West Black Hills) hit .300 with four kills and added four service aces.
The Patriots took control in the first set, jumping out to an 8-3 lead, on their way to winning, 25-18. In the second set, the match was tied at 15-15, but GMU pulled away with five of the next seven points and won 25-21. The Patriots took another 8-3 lead in the third set on their way to their sixth win of the season, 25-15.
George Mason’s Holly Goode had a game-high 12 kills, while Noelle Fanella added nine.
The Retrievers look to bounce back this weekend as they travel to the Villanova Tournament, where they face off against the host Wildcats Friday and George Washington and Princeton on Saturday.
