Retriever Volleyball Defeats Indiana State, Falls to Long Beach State Saturday

—The UMBC volleyball team split a pair of matches Friday at the Long Beach State/UC Irvine Invitational, defeating Indiana State, 3-0, after falling to co-host Long Beach State, 3-0.
The Retrievers hit an outstanding .350 in the first set with 15 kills against only one error, getting them off to a good start in the 25-13, 25-17, 25-16 win. For the match, UMBC hit .293, led the Sycamores in kills 43-25 and had twice as many blocks, 8-4.

UMBC’s middle blockers also had a great game, with sophomore Iman Kennedy (Charlotte, N.C./Independence) hitting .412 with nine kills and six total blocks. Junior Sabrina Hoeks (
“Sabrina had a ton of touches in the middle today,” the coach said. “She slowed down their offense and gave us an opportunity to run a more effective attack.”

“I thought we played very well for being at such a disadvantage in physicality,” Blanchard said. “We weren’t intimidated by playing a five-time national champion, we played aggressively and playing a team of this caliber will help us the rest of the season.”
