UMBC Volleyball Competes in Long Beach State/UC Irvine Invitational This Weekend

LONG BEACH, Calif.The UMBC volleyball team travels to the West Coast this weekend to take part in the Long Beach State/UC-Irvine Invitational. The Retrievers will face off against five-time national champion Long Beach State and Indiana State on Friday at 4 and 7 p.m. EST, respectively, while on Saturday UMBC takes on UC-Irvine in Irvine, Calif. at 8 p.m. The Retrievers have not faced any of their three opponents before.

 

LAST TIME OUT: The Retrievers split a pair of matches in the Madison Bingaman Memorial Tournament at the RAC Arena on Aug. 29. UMBC defeated Long Island, 3-2, before falling to Northeastern, 2-3. Senior Ashley Oscars (Bakersfield, Calif./Liberty) had a game-high 20 kills in the win against the Blackbirds, while freshman Ali Loynachan (Whitby, Ontario, Canada/Sinclair) hit .556 with 11 kills and only one error against the Huskies.

 

SCOUTING THE COMPETITION: Long Beach State (0-2) started off the season with two tough top-25 teams, losing to San Diego State and #2 Texas. They are unofficially 26th in the country, receiving 76 votes in this week’s poll. Indiana State is 1-3 on the season with their only win coming against SIU-Edwardsville. UC-Irvine jumped to #22 in this week’s national rankings after defeating UCONN, Nevada and then-#6 Cal. Kari Pestolesi was named the Sports Imports/AVCA Division I National Player of the Week after averaging 4.00 kills and 3.50 digs per set.

With 97 attacks over the weekend, senior Ashley Oscars now has 3,209 for her career, the fifth-most in school history. Oscars also has 1,062 kills for her career, just two short of sixth place all-time. Senior Kira Giles is fourth all-time on the career assists’ list with 2,595 and eighth with 155 assisted blocks. Senior Pam Jarrett is two digs shy of ninth place on the all-time digs list with 919.
