UMBC Volleyball Picked Fourth in Preseason Poll

CAMBRIDGE, Mass.—The UMBC volleyball team has been picked to finish fourth in the America East this upcoming season in the preseason coaches’ poll, the conference announced Tuesday.

 

The Retreivers received 16 points, behind preseason favorite Binghamton (26), defending conference champion Albany (19) and New Hampshire (17). Stony Brook (9) and Hartford (5) rounded out the poll.

 

The top four teams in the league will advance to the America East Championship with the winner of the tournament receiving the conference’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.

 

UMBC earned a spot in the conference tournament for the second time in three years last year. The Retrievers finished the season 18-13 (7-5 in AEC play) and completed their third consecutive winning season.

 

The Retrievers open the 2009 season Aug. 29 at the RAC Arena for the Madison Bingaman Memorial Tournament. UMBC plays Long Island at 10 a.m. before taking on Northeastern at 5 p.m.
