Sarah Fries Joins UMBC Volleyball as Assistant Coach
BALTIMORE—UMBC head volleyball coach Ian Blanchard announced today that Sarah Fries, a former graduate assistant and four-year standout at Clarion University, has been named assistant coach.
“We are really happy to have Sarah join our program,” Blanchard said. “She came highly recommended from a former assistant here, Jen Harrison, and is very familiar with our systems, my methodology of teaching and the offensive and defensive systems that we like to incorporate, so there is not a lot of reteaching. She is meticulously well-organized, so that will help us become an even more efficient program.”
Fries, a 2008 graduate of Clarion, finished her career with 1,249 kills the fourth-most in Golden Eagle history. As a senior, she was named to the All-Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) First Team, Daktronics All-Regional First Team and AVCA All-Regional Honorable Mention teams. That same year, Fries led the Golden Eagles to a 28-6 record and a NCAA Division II Tournament First Round victory.
“I am very excited to be here,” Fries said. “I think this is going to be a great experience. I’ve gotten a chance to meet most of the girls, and I’m very eager to work with them this upcoming season.”
Fries spent last season as the graduate assistant at Clarion under former UMBC assistant Jen Harrison. She also served as a camp coach for the Matchpoint Volleyball Club for three summers from 2006-08 and coached the Jumpserve Volleyball Club in the spring of 2007.
