Freshman Alyssa Lang earned her fourth double-double against GW Friday.

MORGANTOWN, W.Va.—The UMBC volleyball team defeated George Washington, 3-0, Friday night for its first win ever over the Colonials. The Retrievers controlled the entire match, 25-11, 25-21, and 25-17, in the first day of the WVU Volleyball Classic.

George Washington had won the previous 17 matches including 3-1 last season at the RAC Arena. UMBC improved to 9-3 on the season, while the Colonials fell to 5-3.

The Retrievers immediately jumped on the Colonials in the first set, with freshman Alyssa Lang (Richmond, Va./Deep Run) hitting five kills out of the first six UMBC points as the Dawgs jumped to a 15-3 lead. UMBC finished the first set with a hitting percentage of .412 with 15 kills against only one error.

Lang finished with her fourth double-double of the season with 10 kills and 16 digs. Sophomore Bridget Scheetz (St. Louis, Mo./Uruline Academy) earned five assisted blocks, moving her into sixth all-time in UMBC history with 159 for her career. She also added six kills with no errors.

The Retrievers were outstanding defensively, converting over 60 percent of sideout chances in every set, while holding GW to -.037 hitting percentage for the entire match. Junior Pam Jarrett (Lincoln, Neb./Lincoln Pius X) finished the match with 11 digs, while junior Ashley Oscars (Bakersfield, Calif./Liberty) added nine.

UMBC returns to action tomorrow in the final day of the WVU Volleyball Classic, taking on host West Virginia at 2:30 p.m. and UNC-Greensboro at 5:30 p.m.
